Switch to bio fuel reduces CO2 emission and ensures high efficiencies

Linka Energy installed a 3,000 kW steam plant along with our Norwegian partner, Bioenergy, that supplies TINE’s local dairy in Elnesvaagen in the central part of Norway. The dairy has since reduced their emission of CO2 with around 4,180 tons per year.

Background

TINE is Norway’s leading supplier of dairy products with more than 30 local dairies across Norway. One of these is located in Elnesvaagen in the central part of Norway. Around 8,600 tons of Jarlsberg® and brown cheese is produced from 72 million litres of milk. The dairy needs a large amount of heat energy in their process, in order to produce this.

TINE is aiming to reduce their emission of greenhouse gases with 30 % before 2020, by replacing the use of gas and fossil fuels with renewable energy. The new bio plant in Elnesvaagen is part of this objective.

Considerations

The dairy needs steam for process heating, and earlier they used gas or electricity to produce the necessary steam. By installing a Linka steam plant the dairy can use wood chips instead and hereby reduce their CO2 emission significant.

Wood chips were chosen as fuel, partly because this is much cheaper than pellets. The costs for burning wood chips are equivalent to gas, which is a relatively cheap energy source in Norway. However wood chips are much better for the environment.

Linka was responsible for designing and installing the complete machine system for Bioenergy’s heating plant at Meieriet Elnesvaagen. Bioenergy owns and runs the bio plant which supplies the dairy with heat enough to cover their need for both process and buildings. 

Every year the dairy uses around 14 million kWh, or 14 GWh, of steam. Contrary to plants that are only used for heating, the dairy is dependent on steam year round regardless of season and weather.

The solution

In cooperation with our Norwegian partner, Bioenergy, Linka installed the 3,000 kW steam plant in late 2015. The plant consists of a Linka H boiler, which is here adjusted for producing steam. This operates with a maximum operating pressure of 10 bars and a maximum operating temperature of 176°C.

A 400 m3 wood chips storage is built next to the boiler room. A scraper unit with eight scrapers is installed, from which the wood chips are transported to the boiler by auger. The wood chips storage is immersed with an electrical roof, making it easy and convenient to refill the storage. The yearly consumption of wood chips is expected to be around 20,000 m3, all from local forests.

Since January 2016 the dairy has only used the wood chips boiler, however a gas boiler and an electric boiler from the previous plant are still available as backup.  Because the heat is used in the production it is essential to have a backup in case of failure on the biomass plant. The electric boiler is therefore used as a heated backup and can be put into use instantly in case of disruptions.
